HCA Healthcare encourages and supports nurses growing their careers through leadership development programs. We offer development opportunities at each leadership level, from charge nurses to hospital chief nursing officers.

We help nurses navigate opportunities and thrive in their chosen career paths by investing in and helping them develop professionally and individually. This means:

Charge Nurse Leadership Certificate

The Charge Nurse Leadership Certificate is a training curriculum helping participants develop the skills, language and experience necessary for success.

Director Development

The Director Development Program is a seven to 10-month cohort program designed to prepare aspiring nurse leaders in emergency and surgical services for director positions, with quarterly alumni events to support ongoing development. The program is for aspiring nurses ready to advance into leadership positions in specialty areas, including emergency services, critical care and surgical services.

CNO Orientation

This orientation is a one-day learning event designed to support the success of chief nursing officers (CNOs). New CNOs are introduced to the overarching strategic agenda for nursing across HCA Healthcare and learn about implemented initiatives. This opportunity connects them to enterprise resources and tools and expands professional relationships through networking. Offered three times a year in conjunction with the Executive Transitions Program, the CNO Onboarding Guide is a key resource for new CNOs and developed with Learning and Organizational Development and Clinical Operations Group nursing leadership.

CNO Executive Development

HCA Healthcare supports new and future CNOs through multiple programs. These include the yearlong Executive Development Program and the CNO Onboarding workshop, which introduces participants to HCA Healthcare’s nursing strategic agenda and initiatives.

CNO Forums and Collaboratives

Executive Forums and Collaboratives are one way we leverage HCA Healthcare’s size and scale to solve key business issues and deliver purposeful leadership skill-building. These one or two-day learning events are custom-designed for a targeted group of CNOs. Forums gather small groups and focus on solving business challenges and gaining exposure to key business initiatives. In contrast, Collaboratives gather larger groups and focus on networking and leadership skill-building. Many of the ideas resulting from the forums and collaboratives are developed or piloted.

Executive Development Program

The Executive Development Program (EDP) is a prestigious, year-long, cohort-based program providing aspiring CNOs with executive exposure, best-in-class curriculum, applied experience/projects, and peer networking to prepare them for an executive role.

ACNO Advanced Leadership Program

Advanced Leadership Program for assistant chief nursing officers (ACNOs) is a nominations-based program equipping ACNOs with leadership and operational skills required to move into CNO roles. ACNOs participate in a three-day workshop delivered by the American Nursing Association and internal experts. After this course, participants complete capstone projects focused on achieving the Nursing Strategy and solving business problems.

Leadership Institute Academy (for directors)

Leadership Institute Academy’s (LIA) purpose is to equip leaders to execute strategy effectively, drive operational excellence and lead others to practical action. The cohort-based curriculum includes six instructor led-courses supplemented with course-specific assignments and an optional capstone project.

Leadership Essentials (for supervisors and managers)

Leadership Essentials is an interactive, in-role development virtual program for HCA Healthcare managers and supervisors. This nine-month, cohort-based program includes Harvard Spark modules, case studies developed by HCA Healthcare leaders and the opportunity to network virtually with colleagues across the enterprise.
