As the coronavirus pandemic began in the United States, New Orleans surged in cases and Tulane Medical Center became overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients … 200 nurses from other HCA Healthcare hospitals, which runs Tulane Medical Center, flew there to pitch in.
Healthgrades, a national company that provides information about physicians, hospitals and health care providers from across the country, has ranked Mission Hospital as one of the top 50 in the country. As Hurricane Dorian threatened the Florida coast, top officials at HCA spent Labor Day weekend wringing their hands, pulling all-nighters in a Nashville command center. It almost didn’t matter where the storm hits; HCA Healthcare’s hospitals were going to be affected. With dozens of hospitals on Florida’s east and west coasts, the for-profit hospital chain is exposed every time a hurricane threatens the Sunshine State.
An algorithm may hold the key to saving your life in the emergency room. Hospitals are making a bet that artificial intelligence can help identify and treat patients at highest risk in their ERs, inpatient wards and intensive-care units, for dangers including the deadly infection sepsis and an impending cardiac arrest or stroke.

“We needed to find a partner. HCA Healthcare was in it to do the right thing for our patients, the community and staff. I don’t know if Frisbie would have been able to get through the pandemic. With HCA Healthcare coming in … it was really a savior to the hospital and a savior to the community.”
"You have the business of medicine, the science of medicine and the art of medicine. What is it that holds these things together? It’s our culture. Our culture has been a very sacred part of this organization.”
“We wanted a partner that could respect the Catholic identity. HCA Healthcare has been very supportive. They've not just followed the covenant - they have embraced the covenant. And that, to me, has made it well worth the work it took to put it in place, and it has worked beautifully for us.”
"HCA Healthcare’s partnership brought quality care, expanded services, environmental sustainability improvements and more to the entire Citrus community. They became a vital part of the community, providing our hospital with a substantial financial foundation and a community partnership in local service organizations and programs. Servicing the community during the pandemic was challenging, but HCA Healthcare’s leadership exhibited professionalism, following the latest CDC guidance without ever losing sight of our patients and families. If I had the opportunity to revisit our decision to partner with HCA Healthcare, I would have changed nothing about the process. Their leadership was professional, friendly and comprehensive in all facets.”
