Nashville may be known to some as “Health Care City,” but none of its hospitals made it on a prominent list of the best hospitals nationwide.

That said, three Nashville hospitals placed on U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-25 rankings of Tennessee’s top 10 hospitals, which was released Tuesday.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center ranked No. 1 in the state, Ascension Saint Thomas ranked No. 6 and TriStar Centennial ranked No. 8.

The rankings are based on several factors, including survival rates, readmission rates, patient safety and volume. This year, 138 Tennessee hospitals were evaluated for the ranking.

“Receiving this recognition from U.S. News is a reflection of our caregivers’ dedication and hard work in delivering specialized and high caliber care to our patients,” Dr. Shubhada Jagasia, president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas Hospitals, said in a news release. “We are immensely proud of our teams and deeply honored to be recognized in this renowned list."

Ascension Saint Thomas is one of Nashville’s largest employers, with 8,900 employees locally in 2023, according to Business Journal research. The hospital system operates three of Nashville’s largest hospitals: West, Midtown and Rutherford.

Additionally, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt tied with two other hospitals as the best children’s hospital from the Southeast region, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center is Nashville’s largest hospital, with $12.82 billion in gross patient revenue and 15,369 total employees in 2022, according to Business Journal research. This includes Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. The hospital did not immediately respond for comment Tuesday afternoon.
