Jim Brown

Jim Brown, CEO of North Cypress Medical Center, part of HCA Houston Healthcare

HCA Houston Healthcare, part of HCA Healthcare’s Gulf Coast Division, completed its purchase of North Cypress Medical Center, according to a Sept. 1 press release.

The release did not disclose financial terms.

Additionally, Jim Brown has been named CEO of North Cypress Medical Center, an acute-care hospital at 21214 Northwest Freeway with 139 licensed beds, per the release. He previously was chief development officer at HCA Healthcare’s Gulf Coast Division since joining the system in February 2017. Prior to that, he was senior vice president and CEO of ambulatory services for Memorial Hermann Health System, orthopedic service line executive for the system and CEO of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land.

Jim Brown is uniquely qualified to lead North Cypress Medical Center,” Troy Villarreal, president of HCA Healthcare’s Gulf Coast Division, said in the release. “He has a strong background in hospital operations, a keen understanding of our strategic plan and a proven track record developing services that meet the community’s healthcare needs.”

The deal also includes four freestanding emergency centers in the Barker Cypress, Spring Cypress, Fairfield and Highway 249 areas, per the release.

News that HCA was working on a deal to purchase North Cypress Medical Center broke earlier this year. The acquisition also comes roughly a year after HCA became the largest health care system in the Houston area with the purchase of four other local hospitals:

  • Houston Northwest Medical Center, a 423-bed hospital at 710 Cypress Creek Parkway
  • Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, a 181-bed hospital at 10655 Steepletop Drive
  • Park Plaza Hospital, a 444-bed hospital at 1313 Hermann Drive that includes Plaza Specialty Hospital
  • Tomball Regional Medical Center, a 350-bed hospital at 605 Holderrieth Blvd.

HCA acquired Tomball Regional Medical Center from Franklin, Tennessee-based Community Health Systems Inc. and the other three from Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. Both deals were announced in spring 2017 and closed in August 2017.

Nashville, Tennessee-based parent company HCA Healthcare Inc. (NYSE: HCA) reported $43.6 billion in revenue for 2017, up about 5 percent from 2016, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. As of Dec. 31, the company had about 253,000 employees nationwide.
