Kristine’s story

How one nurse’s commitment to care changed the life of her patient forever

“I felt his capacity for love...Alex made our family complete.”

Kristine Hafner, a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) nurse at HCA-affiliate Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, is known for treating her patients like family, and her commitment to care changed the life of one of her patients forever.

When Kristine met 11-month-old Alex, he had some of the most horrific injuries she had ever seen on a child. As she nursed him back to health, she felt his capacity for love despite the abuse he endured. And after two months in the hospital, Kristine – an advocate for foster parenting – found Alex a forever home – her own!

Now, the little boy who spent months under Kristine’s care at the hospital will thrive for the rest of his life as her son.

“Alex is a success story for everybody. He had the right doctors at the right time…everyone at Sunrise Children’s Hospital can take credit for this amazing three-year-old we have.”
