*Must have flexibility to attend hospital orientation. Hospital orientation will be an upcoming Monday (full day), with nursing/clinical orientations on Tuesday and Wednesday (partial days) the first week.

I.                   Position Summary: 

The Student Nurse Extern demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary in a cross trained role as a unit secretary.  The Student Nurse Extern performs delegated duties consistent with his/her scope of practice, under the supervision of the RN and assists with direct patient care; functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery at SMC.


II.                Position Requirements:

A.     Licensure/Certification/Registration:  

Current BLS Certification required.  Currently enrolled in an accredited Nursing curriculum.

B.     Education:                                           

Currently enrolled in a formal undergraduate academic program in nursing leading to a degree in nursing or has completed the nursing program within the last four months. 

Employee has completed Nursing Fundamentals and Adult Medical/Surgical clinical rotation.

C.     Experience:  

Completion of first semester of Nursing School.  Minimum completion of Medical/Surgical 1 and associated clinical rotation.

D.     Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

Demonstrates good organizational skills.

Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external customers.

Some specified skills may be required by specific departments.


III.             Degree of Supervision Required:

Under supervision of RN.


IV.         Orientation Period:   

Minimum of 2 weeks contingent upon experience.  Extensive orientation may be required and will be determined by Department Director.
