Report: HCA could buy 5 KC-area surgery centers

HCA Midwest Health will move its division headquarters across the state line into a new Overland Park office this summer. The planned 25,000-square-foot division headquarters currently are under construction as part of the Overland One office park, near the intersection of Interstate 435 and Nall Avenue. HCA Midwest currently has offices on East 104th Street in Kansas City.

According to the Nashville Business Journal, Envision Healthcare Corp. (NYSE: HVC) has struggled since its December 2016 merger with AmSurg Corp.

Now, the AmSurg ambulatory surgery business is exactly what Nashville-based HCA Healthcare Inc. wants to get out a joint offer to buy Envision, Reuters reported Friday based on "people familiar with the matter."

In combination with KKR & Co., HCA has made an offer to acquire Envision that would see the health care giant, which is the Kansas City area's largest hospital system, take over AmSurg, while KKR would take over the rest of the company, which includes Envision Physician Services and Evolution Health.

AmSurg has 5 area facilities — the Endoscopic Imaging Center in Overland Park, Westglen Endoscopy Center in Shawnee, and three The Endoscopy Centers in Kansas City and Independence.

According to the Kansas City Business Journal's Top Outpatient Surgery Centers List, HCA has at least a partial ownership in seven of the area's top 25 centers. The five AmSurg facilities are not included on the most recent List.

Envision, which offers physician and post-acute services and owns hundreds of surgery centers, has requested potential buyers to submit final offers later this month, according to Reuters' sources.

HCA Midwest is the Kansas City area's second-largest private sector employer, with 9,924 employees working at a seven hospitals and an untold numbers of clinics, physician practices and other facilities throughout the metro.
